History of Washington Terrace

Washington Terrace is  an out-growth of a World War II temporary military housing project. The Terrace Housing Project came into being in 1942. The project was necessary to insure housing for the many people who came to the area to work at government installations. There was no thought at the time of becoming a permanent community and after the war the housing project was slated to be torn down, but a farsighted citizenry and community leaders had willed otherwise. Through federal funds and private investments the housing project was converted into single family dwellings and began to expand.
